IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN BECOME IT. My dream is to be a published writer. All great things begin with a DREAM...

Self-discipline...

.I've never been very good at it. I'm realizing, though, that without it my list of goals will stay just that. Without self-discipline and making myself do things I may not want to do at the moment, my dreams will remain dreams.
This applies to everything in my life, not just my writing. I've started exercising every day, whether I want to or not. (If I waited until I wanted to exercise, well...) I'm finding that once I get started, I kind of like it. And once it's over, I feel great about myself and what I just accomplished.
Writing is like that. Sometimes I may want to take a nap with my baby instead of using that precious quiet time to write, but I force myself to stay awake and write anyway. And I always feel great about it when I'm finished.
Self-discipline is still something I struggle with at times. I'm human, after all, but the dreams I dream of the things I want (being published, for one) are well worth the effort.

  1. Hi Tammy! Thanks so much for the follow, and I look forward to reading much more from you.

I feel so much better once I've exercised some self-discipline. Whether we're talking about in the gym or in the writing studio, I can relate to what you say here. This is a great time of year for pushing myself -- those New Years goals are still fresh in my mind!

    Hope your day is wonderful!

  4. Self-discipline is hard--but like you say, we feel better after we finish! So grab hold of those times when you can, but don't feel guilty if you can't. After all, your baby is little for SUCH a short time and you want to be your best for her, too :-) Enjoy accomplishments now, no matter how small, and believe there is still plenty of time for bigger ones...

  6. It's weird, when I first started writing, I didn't need to discipline myself to write. It was something I looked forward to everyday. Now, I write when I feel like, and I need to get back to writing every day or close to it.

  8. Good post. I agree that without self-discipline, dreams just remain dreams. Loved your quote from Vivekananda!

  9. Hi, found you through Angie Lofthouse. I can relate to the "staying awake" challenge. Writing requires so much physical stamina more than I expected. Good for you on plowing through those moments. I remember when I was a young mom, I was frustrated that my writing was in very slow motion, but there's always a time and season for everything. :-)

  10. Yes how easy it is to set the targets and then live as if you have already done them.
